Mombasa Serena Beach Hotel Resort

Mombasa Serena Beach Hotel Resort is one of the classiest hotels on the Mombasa Coast in Kenya. Beautifully set in stunning gardens with typical Serena character and charm, this is definitely one of our most recommended hotel. It may be a little more expensive than other Mombassa beach hotels, but the quality and location are far superior to what is found elsewhere in Mombasa, Kenya Upon entering the Mombassa luxury beach resort you can feel the charisma that it oozes, with beautifully hand carved wooden furniture and stunning brass ornaments which are found around the place. They even have a parrot in an ancient old wooden bird cage who can speak Swahili. The living areas are beautifully furnished in an old Mombasa style. As is with most of the Serena Hotels & Lodges, they have a magnificent swimming pool located on the beach front.

The Serena Hotel Mombasa also boasts stunning gardens with a multitude of palm trees, water fountains, bougainvilleas and various other tropical looking plants. Their beach is also gorgeous, white sands; palm fringed and stretches on for miles. Serena Resort Mombassa is one of East Africa finest beach resorts, and the only property on Kenya's coast with the distinction of being a member of Club Best Hotels of the World and leading hotels of the worldMombasa Serena Beach resort offers consummate standards of resort accommodations, service, cuisine and amenities. With the shimmering sands and waters of the Indian Ocean stretching before it, set amidst verdant, bougainvillea-filled gardens, and shaded by gently swaying palm trees, this place represents the ultimate escape.
There are monkeys around the hotel, but the staff does a good job of keeping them at bay. Very entertaining but can also help themselves to your fruit, so the hotel don’t encourage feeding.

The blue lizards in the gardens are just amazing! Also look out for the weaver birds making their nest in the rushes in the fish pond. The Mombassa beach hotels gardens are immaculate and have a lot of tropical flower varieties. This resort will suit you if you’re seeking calm, peace and tranquility. Breakfast is splendid. All the normal hot buffet dishes plus some local specialities to try, and chef cooks fresh eggs or pancakes. And 8 varieties of fresh fruit juice, If you’re there on a Friday night, the Kenyan buffet is a must. Also visit the ice cream parlour for homemade ice cream - every bit as good as you’d find in Italy. And the café offers good lunch options, and has a proper pizza oven. Complimentary tea and coffee all day in the lobby and beach garden bar. Overall, the food quality, service and hygiene standard was very high. There’s a free shuttle bus into the centre of Mombasa town.

The Mombasa Serena Beach Hotel Resort swimming pool is very clean and the warm. The beach is very fine white sand, and when the tide goes out, it’s time to spot what has been left behind in the shallow pools.
The Mombasa Serena Beach Hotel resort grounds are extremely well equipped with tennis courts, squash courts, ping pong, pool table, swimming pool, kiddie pool, hot tub, ice cream cafe, poolside (and swim up) bar, main restaurant, and a very deluxe seafood restaurant. There is also minibars and 24/7 room service. The Maisha spa is the most amazing. The facility is top of the line complete with a separate area for yoga with a suspended platform above calm running water. Each treatment room has a private outdoor garden with a lush shower in case your treatment calls for you to wash off. Additionally there is the ladies only and men only change area with a private hot tub, steam room, dry heat room, and showers with cascading centre-shower nozzles. You will enjoy a pedicure, manicure, and a massage.

Because the Serena Beach Hotel offers a relaxed daytime ambiance and features a wide range of activity options, we recommend that you include a selection of beachwear, swimwear and sportswear for daytime wear. As for the evenings, we suggest that a selection of cool, lightweight, casual-to-smart clothing would be appropriate whilst a light wrap or jacket may also be useful on breezy evenings. Finally, due to the fact that malarial mosquitoes are active between dusk and dawn you may like to bring some long sleeved clothing and long trousers or skirts for evening wear. The following items are recommended for inclusion in your travel kit: sun hat, UV sunscreen, sunglasses, cover-up T-shirts, insect repellent and anti-malarial prophylactics.

The whole ‘Whitesands Resort concept’ began in 1930 and the following is the chronology of what happened afterwards:
1930 - Mr. H G Robertson bought a new house with two bedrooms flanked by a long lounge. Robertson was working as an Editor of Mombasa Times, which grew into present day "Standard". He said he will call his new place Whitesands. Ali Bin Salim – The Liwali (Chief) gave Robertson a few more acres of land on the beach.
1941 - Mrs. Stocker bought ‘The Whitesands’ from Widow Robertson.

She built a larger Establishment of 8 cottages and Whitesands was open for business. Incidentally – the first business was from the Royal Navy a Brigade of enlisted lady Sailors known as WRENS, who were sent to assist in shore duties. A Phrase was coined at this time to describe Whitesands as WHITESANDS Waving Palms, Silverstrands, Luck, Love, Romance and Revelry.
1946 - Mrs. Stocker sold Whitesands to David Durwood Brown. He is credited with making Whitesands popular with the locals and it became known as the "PUB BY THE SEA".
1960 - Akberali Manzi bought Whitesands from Widow Stocker. Seventy new rooms were built, the central complex was reconstructed and a boat bar was introduced – later a bathing pool called ‘LIDO’ was added. Renovation went on and by 1976, the ‘Pub by the Sea’ was turned into a five star hotel.
1976 - Sarova Group of Hotels bought the Whitesands Hotel and set into motion ambitious development plans which changed the hotel from 70 rooms in 1976 to 173 and then to 340 by 1996.
